PORTLAND MEETING INFO

The Portland meetings are on the second Tuesday of every month. Everyone is welcome to attend the meetings. When you get to the Buffalo Gap, go in the SW California St. side door, turn left, and go upstairs. We have the whole upper floor, which has its own bathrooms. For more information on Chapter 124 in Portland/Vancouver/Salem, contact Chapter Chair Ev Helm, e-mail chairman at sbe124 dot org, or call him at 503-977-7752. For a map and directions see http://www.sbe124.org/SBE124_maps.html .

LAST MONTH'S MEETING

Kevin Clayborn, Orban/CRL North American Sales Manager, spoke about recently passed Federal legislation and its possible impact on broadcasters:  namely the CALM Act (HR1084, Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation), and what it means when Congress passes laws not entirely based on science.  Mainly, an unclear mandate that depends on the FCC to make it clear enough to enforce.

NEXT MONTH'S MEETING

NOTE:  The April meeting will be one week earlier that usual, on April 6th, to avoid NAB Las Vegas.

NewTek Factory Rep, John Strauch, will be displaying the latest HD solution for Portable Live Production.  Three cameras, virtual sets, HD Editing, and much more all in one small box (it streams, too!).

(Lunch will be covered)

REBUILDING A COMMUNITY FM STATION IN HAITI

From Mike Brown N7AXC

Austin Airwaves and AMARC are seeking the following items to help with putting Creole language community radio station Radyo Zetwal Peyizan "Radio Star of the Peasants" back on the air at 93.5 FM in Fondwa, Haiti.  The station was completely destroyed with loss of life, following the devastating 1/12/10 earthquake.  (Imagine a partially collapsed studio building that no one dares to enter, with two of your co-workers bodies still inside.)

MAINTENANCE ENGINEER OPENING AT OPB

From Everett Helm:  I would like to make note of our position posting for Maintenance Engineer in La Grande.  We hope to have the posting done tomorrow [Friday 3/5], at http://www.opb.org/insideopb/careers/jobs/, but definitely before our Tuesday meeting.

CGC COMMUNICATOR

Bob Gonsett W6VR, who has put out the CGC Communicator in various formats for the last 35 years, is going back to a once a month e-mailed newsletter.  Most of the weekly contributions, i.e.:  Letters to the Editor,  will now be available at http://www.earthsignals.com/press/.  Chapter 124 Vice Chair Phil Kane K2ASP, Esq., P.E. has contributed a lot in the past.  You can see the newsletters back to 1996 at http://www.bext.com/_CGC/contents.htm.

BIZARRE AM SITE IN THE MAKING

There are a few 8 and 9-tower AM arrays in the U.S. and Canada, mainly to protect the countries' stations from each other.  But there is one famous one that is still on the air in Dallas on 1190, which is now KFXR.  It uses twelve 87.2 degree (electrical length) towers at night.  Six pairs of towers.  You can see the technical details here, and the story and picture by Scott Fybush at http://www.fybush.com/site-021107.html.

Now, a guy wants to put on a 12-tower station in the Fresno, CA suburb of Easton.  But, each of the 12 towers is a different electrical length, ranging from 80.4 to 101.8 degrees.  Four groups of 3 towers.  Technical details here.

 LIFE WITH HD RADIO

There are 12 FM HD signals (nine with HD2, one also with HD3) and three AM HD signals on the air in the Portland market. Go here for a complete list.

There are now over 1000 multicast stations and 100 HD Radios to choose from.  See http://www.hdradio.com/buyers_guide.php.
