THE END OF LORAN

I am fascinated by towers and big transmitters.  A group of the biggest non-TV towers and huge VLF transmitters are now being dismantled or demolished:  the world’s LORAN-C sites, replaced by GPS.  The sites controlled by the U.S. were maintained by the Coast Guard.

A story from the Santa Rosa, CA Press Democrat about the LORAN site near there.  (Thanks to Joe Perez WB6RUT for the link.)

YouTube video of the demolition from six camera angles of the Port Clarence, AK LORAN tower.  Quality up to 720p.

YouTube video from LORAN Station Baudette in Minnesota which includes a tech working on the multi-module solid-state transmitter while it was on the air.  You can hear the rig resonating with the data, and the tech is wearing hearing protection.

YouTube video of the turning off of LORAN Station Tok in Alaska.

And very nice YouTube video the LORAN site in Searchlight, NV, between L.A. and Las Vegas, with quality up to 1080p.

SEA-PAC

Don’t forget SEA-PAC, the ARRL regional ham convention in Seaside.  June 4-6 (Friday-Sunday).  See http://www.seapac.org/

LIFE WITH HD RADIO

There are 12 FM HD signals (ten with HD2, one with HD3) and three AM HD signals on the air in the Portland market. Go here for a complete list.

There are now over 1000 multicast stations and 100 HD Radios to choose from.  See http://www.hdradio.com/buyers_guide.php.

Curious about FM HD Radio extended-hybrid modes?

89.1 KMHD got their HD2 going, broadcasting the Mt. Hood Community College student station.  And the analog and HD1 are finally in sync.

Clear Channel has ordered Nautel HD transmitters capable of –10 dBc (10% of analog power) for 106.7 KLTH, and 107.5 KXJM, that’s about 5 and 3.5 kW respectively.  All the commercial FM stations at the Sylvan Tower site, except 98.7 KUPL, are using the new Dielectric panel on the new tower.  It has separate analog and HD feeds, just like the FM panel on the Skyline Tower.
