Long ago, but not so far away, Randy Pugsley was the Chief Engineer of
1490 KBZY Salem, OR. In August of 2006, KBZY's transmitter site lease expired, and their
main transmitter got moved to a temporary site across from the Salem Airport.
Before anything could happen to it, Ernie Hopseker and my wife and I helped Randy move
the RCA to Randy's garage. |

It's in pretty good shape, since it became the backup by the 70's. |

The 833's. There are only two tube types in the transmitter since the
rectifiers got replaced with solid-state plug-ins. |
Randy starts to remove the iron, to make it easier to move. |
More iron in the back. |
We also rescued the Gates ATU, which had the original RCA antenna current
meter in it. |
Exit strategy. The tailgate ramp is very handy. |
Out the door it goes. |
Into the rented trailer. |
Transmitter and two vintage racks, ready to go. |
Here's the transmitter building. You'd think it was in the middle of
nowhere, but it has apartment buildings on two sides, a park on the third, and a street
with no access on the fourth. |
Illustrates the term "rustic." |
The tower base is a bit grown over with blackberries, and on the west
side, poison oak. |
There is a tower base in there somewhere... |
220' of now useless tower, actually 120 degrees at 1490. |
